Gerard Ryden had been shunned by his neighbours when he supported William of Orange and as a reward had been given Fenfallow, a lonely house near the marshes. His daughter, Judith, grows up motherless and friendless, until Gerard decrees that she must marry an unknown Dutch cousin, Maurice. Judith comes to love her husband, but her jealous nature brings terrible consequences for him, herself and their children.
