During the First World War Poppy finds freedom and real love. She marries, but is widowed after a brief but idyllically happy marriage. She is left to cope with Chloe, her determined and strong-willed stepdaughter who is enjoying the life of a bright young thing.
She also has a demanding mother to look after. Poppy provides unwavering support for her family and seems to deny herself any needs or desires.
