Poking fun at Star Trek fans during a now infamous 'Saturday Night Live' sketch, William Shatner's comic rallying cry of 'Get A Life!' has been indelibly emblazoned into the collective psyche of Trekkers everywhere.
Uncomfortable with speaking to fans onstage, the actor had spent the better part of the previous quarter century steadfastly avoiding convention appearances. Persuaded to break his rule to publicise the release of the movie 'Star Trek Generations', Shatner found himself jolted by an unavoidable dose of reality.
Touched and fascinated by the enthusiasm, love and good humour with which he was met at convention after convention, he was overwhelmed to realise that in almost three decades of starship hopping, he had never taken the time to understand Star Trek's legion of fans. But that was soon to change...For the past several years, William Shatner has been treating each Star Trek convention like an enormous research project.
Interviewing fans, dealers, fellow cast-members, convention organisers and promoters in all corners of the planet - even going undercover beneath alien makeup - Shatner had his eyes opened and his mind boggled.
