** There are a few short audio defects in this set which last a few seconds, mainly during the first 10 mins of Side 1 ** Arthur Ransome, born in 1884, became famous as the author of the much loved 'Swallows and Amazons' children's book. He worked for the 'Manchester Guardian' as a foreign correspondent, travelling to Russia and reporting at...
first-hand the events of the Revolution in 1917. In 'Rod and Line' he collects together fifty fishing articles he'd written for the Manchester Guardian, exploring a wide range of angling experiences, from the morality of nymphs, to fishing inns, fishing in Lilliput, carp, chub and even how to make spinning interesting.
As an added bonus he includes a delightful chapter on fishing in Russia, in which he translates his favourite fishing extracts from the works of the famous Russian author Sergei Aksakov.
Interestingly, a review of the book in the TLS (in 1929) expresses the hope that Ransome would one day write a 'real fishing book'. If he ever did, it has not been published.
