Nick's father has left the Fleming family farm near Calderbrig to fight with Prince Charles Edward in the 1745 Revolt - a move which results in Nick's expulsion from Saint Bees School. He receives support from loyal farm workers, Mr Paradise (his former teacher) and his uncle Eldon - but all is not what it seems.
This is an engrossing tale set in present-day West Cumbria with a wealth of local detail and insights into the harsh worlds of iron working and hill farming. Although written in 1946, the themes of trust, betrayal, love and the frailty of human nature remain fresh and relevant today.
